The town’s name derives from the archaic Sicilian term “Mùrika” which literally means “stone”, indicating the rocky nature of the place on which the city rises; According to other sources, the denomination would have been assigned by the Phoenicians, who called it “Mtika”, a term that indicates a welcoming and protected place. You will visit the Duomo di San Giorgio and the Church of San Pietro. During the visit is a sweet break for the tasting of the famous chocolate of Modica. Continue for Scicli and visit the town: the square, the Mother Church, via Mormon Pen, and then pass in front of the Town Hall (the Montalbano Commissariat in the homonymous Fiction) and Benevento Palace. Defined by many as a “crib-town”, Scicli has been awarded, in 2002, its historic center of the UNESCO World Heritage title. Its historic center is the expression of the late-Baroque creative genius, the result of the reconstruction of the 18th century following the disastrous earthquake of 1693 that raged the entire city. The famous writer Elio Vittorini in his book “The Cities of the World” painted Scicli as perhaps the most beautiful city in the world.
